Why AI-built apps look generic, and how to get one that doesn't

You've probably noticed it: a lot of apps built with AI share a certain look. The same clean-but-anonymous layout, the same default blue, the same rounded cards. It works, and it's also forgettable. The good news is this isn't a ceiling on what AI can do. It's a predictable result of how most AI building happens, and once you see why, you can steer around it.

Why the sameness happens

When you ask for "an app to track clients," and say nothing about how it should look, the AI fills the gap with the safest, most average choice it knows. That's not a flaw, it's the correct move given no direction. Average is what you get when you don't ask for anything else. Multiply that across thousands of people giving equally vague prompts, and you get a whole genre of apps that look like siblings.

The fix starts with you saying more

The single biggest lever is giving the look some direction, in plain words. You don't need design vocabulary. "Make it feel calm and premium, lots of white space." "Warm and playful, not corporate." "Serious and dense, like a tool for professionals." Even one sentence of intent moves the result from anonymous to specific, because now the AI is aiming at something instead of defaulting to the middle.

The same is true for the small things that carry a lot of character: "use a real accent color, not blue," "big friendly headings," "make the empty states feel welcoming." These are the details that separate an app that looks templated from one that looks considered.

Point at what's off, don't accept the first look

A first version is a starting point, not a verdict, and design is where reacting to what you see pays off most. Open it, and say what feels generic. "The spacing is cramped." "This screen is boring, give it more hierarchy." "The buttons feel heavy." You'll get further improving a real screen in front of you than trying to specify perfect design up front, because you can actually see what's wrong.

Where a dedicated design step changes things

Here's the deeper reason so many AI apps look the same: in a one-model, one-shot setup, design is an afterthought squeezed into the same pass as the logic. Nothing is looking at the app purely as a designer would. When there's a real design step, something whose only job is how the app looks and feels, the result stops being average by default.
